right around now is when I usually get fully into all things spring. whereas March can sometimes be considered a winter month, April isĀ most definitely in the spring category. this time of year, I go for light – lighter shades, lighter textures, lighter lips.

I’ve added a few things to my closet and makeup drawer in anticipation of the longer, sunnier days. I have this blazer in the original, winter-weight wool and picked it up in this spring-friendly wool/cotton mix in the light grey. I didn’t have any items from Tory Burch, but something about this satchel really caught my eye – perhaps it’s the ladylike top handle juxtaposed with its simple, clean lines. loft plus debuted several weeks back, and while some things have been hit or miss, this dress is 100% a hit. it’s fully-lined and has the prettiest pattern that’s classic but also a little unique. I plan on wearing it on the shoulder to weddings in the warmer months. as for these sandals, they were love at first sight (got them in the mustard yellow). I’m warning you now: I am loving all things yellow these days, so expect to see this color often.

and last but not least, perhaps the easiest way to update your look for a new season is by switching out your lipcolor. this balm is amazing – medium coverage, light as air on the lips, and comes in a slew of colors (I have #12, which is the perfect MLBB and #9, which is a pretty wash of soft fuchsia). bonus: it smells like mangoes! for a full-on lip, I’ve picked up 3 shades of the mac x padma lakshmi collab, in sunset rose (a pretty nude), nude fudge (a soft pink brown that reminds me of the 90s in the best way), and mittai pink, a warm pop of pink. look out for a new-in-makeup post soon.

hello, spring

hi, there! it’s finally spring, and I’m back to blogging. life has been a crazy whirlwind the past 6 months as I got my bearings under me in a new city & a new job, so I’ve been very quiet around here. but I missed it, and I feel like I’m finally ready to put out some content again.

I hope the days are getting longer and the temps are warming up where you are!

spring scents

spring scentsI’m quite loyal to perfumes. although I’ll try out a free sample now & then, I only own 3 full-sized bottles: one fall/winter scent, one spring/summer scent, & one special occasion scent. I prefer my warmer weather scents to be lighter in general, and I’m partial to citrus and water notes. for the past 5 years or so, my spring/summer scent has been dolce & gabbana light blue, which to me smells like citrus & ocean.

I don’t know if my sense of scent has changed or if the formula has changed, but I sprayed a little bit of light blue on a couple weeks ago and it did not smell the way it usually does. my favorite part about this scent is the tartness of it, and this time around, it wasn’t there, making the perfume rounder & less sharp. it was ok, but it wasn’t the scent I remembered. I thought maybe I was just being weird or OCD, so I kept using it, but every time, I smelled a softer, rounder scent. I even tried a spray of the tester bottle they had in-store as I was out last week and again, it seemed like the scent had changed.

so I’ve been on the hunt for a new spring/summer scent since. I’m sampling the three above currently. I have a deluxe sample & the solid version of nirvana white, and I’m noticing that there’s a slight difference between the liquid & solid version. the solid version is more subtle, which I think I prefer. brit sheer is the brightest-smelling of the three – it’s definitely a light, happy scent that still manages to be fresh & not too sweet. lazy sunday morning is aptly named – it smells like clean sheets & a relaxed, sunny morning. it’s a little different for me as it’s not very citrusy, but I like how clean & nostalgic it is. I’ve yet to commit to one enough to warrant a full-size purchase, but I’m enjoying rotating between the 3 in the meantime.

do you have any recommendations for a spring/summer scent?

spring wishlist

I know, I know. it’s only february. but then again, it’s only february and I’m already beyond ready for some warm weather. aside from purchases for school (compression socks, anyone?) and the random replacement purchase (think black cardigan to replace the one somebody shrunk in the dryer), I haven’t really added anything to the wardrobe. I have some time yet before spring makes its way around here and a new capsule wardrobe is required, but these are the holes in my wardrobe I’d like to fill in the new season: a slouchy grey tee; a light-colored, lightweight cardigan; slip-on sneaks; espadrilles; a fun, casual bag; and a pair of dress-up/dress-down wedges. I’m realizing now that this list is shoe-heavy, but even james agrees that I’m overdue for replacements of some well-loved pieces.

tip of the day: when your guy tells you you need new shoes, you need new shoes.

what are you eyeing for the spring?

it’s been about a month now since I started wearing my spring capsule wardrobe. I’ve actually been loving the experience – getting dressed is so much easier. whenever it starts feeling too repetitive or boring, I challenge myself to come up with a new pairing I never tried before, and that usually does the trick. another great thing to inject some newness to my wardrobe without actually adding any new pieces of clothing is to play around with accessories. they’re not just for capsule wardrobes – they’re often the easiest way to infuse new dimension & interest into the most basic of outfits. these are the accessories that have been in heavy rotation over the last month.

scarves | on days when I can’t be bothered to put on jewelry or do anything extra to jazz up an outfit, scarves are my go-to. they’re so easy to grab as you’re running out the door, and there are endless ways you can style them. since I tend to wear solid basics, I opt for pattern & color for my scarves for contrast. this scarf & this scarf are the newest additions to my scarf collection. they’ve come in really handy as an extra layer on chilly mornings, and the patterns are adorable.

fedora | it took me years to find a fedora that didn’t look comical on my large head. I had all but given up on finding one until I randomly tried this one on absentmindedly while browsing target. it fit, it was cute, & it was affordable. nothing says I’m ready for some sun more than a fun hat & a pair of sunglasses. bonus: when I’m having a bad hair day, I just plop this on my head & call it good.

bags | I go through my bags pretty regularly, but it seems that I always end up having a go-to tandem of one small bag & one big bag. the small bag mvp recently has been this one from rebecca minkoff. I brought it with me on our trip to san antonio, and it was the perfect sightseeing bag. it looks tiny, but it holds a lot, and this color (biscuit) goes with everything. as for my go-to big bag, it’s been this lovely piece from cuyana. the color is perfect, I can fit my whole life in there & then some, the craftsmanship is high quality, & I love the brand’s philosophy (fewer, better things).

jewelry | I favor pretty minimal jewelry most days, but especially in the warmer months when I want to wear as little as possible all around. I always wear a watch. lately, I’ve been reaching for a white leather strap version (similar here). the color is perfect for the sunny days, and the leather strap seems lighter visually & physically than a metal bracelet. I’ve also been loving a dainty, barely-there necklace. this one is my absolute favorite. it’s modern yet feminine.

scent | my much-loved spring/summer scent is dolce & gabbana light blue. I know it’s such a popular scent, but I haven’t found anything I like better. I like that it’s light & refreshing, with notes that remind me of hot, sunny days by the ocean. other citrus scents I’ve tried either smell too much like a household cleaner or are too sweet; this one has a tart, lemony scent that has some bite & isn’t too sweet. I recently also discovered this scent, which is a good alternative when I want something softer & a little different, but it hasn’t usurped light blue as my favorite.
